May-June Curriculum May 14, 2009

In our elementary room for the next month or so the kids will be going through the book of 1 Samuel and then looking at Christ as the faithful high priest forever.

Their memory verse is: Colossians 4:6 “ Let your speech always be gracious.”

The preschool class is continuing its journey through the New Testament and is entering into the ministry of Jesus, staring with his baptism.

Their memory verse is: John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

During your family devotion time practice these verses with your kids, ask them what they are learning, ask them to tell you who Jesus is and why He came to this earth and if you have elementary age kids, ask them to tell you what they have been learning in their class about the Old Testament. Our elementary room will be focusing this week on Judges 13 and 15 – the story of Samson. We will use this story to talk about Samson’s faith in God and his strength, but more importantly how “earthly delivers” do fail and that only Jesus came and did not fail. He is our true deliver – see Hebrews 4:5.

The scripture memory verse is Psalm 27:1 “The Lord is my light and salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

Our Preschool Room will be  focusing on Restoration this month as they look at the birth of  Jesus. This week they will be learning about Simeon and Anna meeting Jesus and praising God for His arrival.

September – October 2008 September 10, 2008

The kids are studying about Joseph and his eventual new home in Egypt. Each week these Old Testament teachings are paired with a teaching about it relates to Jesus. (For example: when Joseph is thrown in jail and then called upon to interpret Pharoah’s dreams, the kids are reminded that like Joseph, Jesus was a righteous servant who was numbered among transgressors unjustly. Like Joseph, Jesus was and used of God to bring salvation for His people.)

For our memory verses the kids will be learning Romans 8:28 & 3, which has a wonderful song to help them in their memory from the Seeds Family Worship CD “Purpose” track 9.

Our Scripture focus for the next few months will be Genesis 22-31.  Our memory verse is Psalm 103:8 “The lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” I encourage you to learn this as a family and to discuss with you kids what this means in terms of His amazing love for us and how He demonstrates this to us.

Compassion Child May 21, 2008

Redeemer Kids recently adopted a child, Aminata Sawadogo, from Burkina Faso. She lives on the plains of Zangwetin, home to approximately 12,000 residents. Typical houses are constructed of dirt floors, mud brick or concrete brick walls and tin roofs. The primary ethnic group is Mossi and the most commonly spoken language is Moore. The regional diet consists of maize, beans, chicken, fish, bread, beef, rice, goat and millet. Common health problems in this area include malaria, meningitis and diarrhea. Most adults are unemployed but some work as day laborers and earn the equivalent of $20 per month. This community needs more public schools, income generating activities and employment opportunities. Our sponsorship allows the staff of Apostolic Church Kaya Child Development Center to provide Aminata with Bible teaching, games, hygiene education, social clubs, health activities, tuition and field trips. In addition, reading and writing skills teaching is available for non-schooled children. Twenty-eight percent of the children in this project are not attending school because they lack economic resources. The center staff will also provide monthly meetings for the parents or guardians of Aminata.

Our goals in this sponsorship is to help the kids of Redeemer understand more of the world that God has created, to help them to learn compassion, and ultimately to teach them to give God their “first Fruits” as they learned a few weeks ago from the bible story of Cain and Abel (Genesis 4) because we know that “God will supply every need of (ours) according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)

So please join us as we sponsor Aminata and encourage your child to bring an offering for her each week.

God’s Story Curriculum May 21, 2008

We are currently going through Genesis with our God’s story curriculum. Our goal with this curriculum is to not only understand the character of God better as the kids learn these truths, but for them to also see Jesus in each story. To help reinforce this, the kids are focusing on a verse or two each month from the New Testament that shows how Jesus really is the answer or hero to each biblical truth.

 

Redeemer Kids Volunteer May 21, 2008

To become a volunteer or to enter a Redeemer Kids room on Sunday a completed and approved background check must be on file. Wonderful Volunteers…..

Below are a few rules that I would like to adhere to as we begin this process of serving the kids and parents of Redeemer.

• Be in the child care area by 8:45 to set up the room and pray over the room and kids for the service. Kids can start being checked in at 9:15.

• Wash your hands before you come into the room and use hand sanitizer…we are trying to keep germs out as much as possibleJ!

• Follow check-in/check-out procedures posted on the clipboard.

• Never leave a child alone, and never be alone with a child. Please always leave the door open and the lights on.

• Use appropriate language for age level and development.

• Follow diaper changing policy posted at the diaper changing area.

• Treat all children equally with respect and empathy. Avoid prejudicial attitudes.

• Use non-punitive methods of discipline and offer guidance in a positive manner. If you do have to discipline a child…please use a time-out or withdrawal from activity. Physical restraining a child or using corporal punishment is prohibited. Follow up with the parent after the service.

• Use hand sanitizer and wear gloves before giving any snack to kids. Make sure parents have agreed to the snack on the sign-in sheet.

• Disinfect toys after each service with Lysol spray / or disinfecting spray – again let’s avoid germsJ!

• Do not accept a child into childcare if he/she exhibits any of the following illness: a fever of 100 degrees or higher, a constant cough or runny nose, diarrhea or vomiting, any contagious rash, any redness or drainage from the eyes, lice, nits, scabies, impetigo, or extreme fatigue.

• Parents of the Preschool and Elementary classes have been asked to take their child to the restroom before coming to class. If a child does need to use the restroom, take the entire class if you are the only volunteer and stand between the restrooms with the class. Close the door only enough to give the child privacy while you all wait outside…do not close the door all the way. Be sure the child washes his or her hands when finished.

• Volunteers will not give medication to children (this includes diaper rash ointment and powder).

• A First Aid Kit is available in the Nursery, while the Preschool and Elementary rooms have plenty of Band Aids and gloves. Please alert parents immediately if a child needs any type of medical attention.

• Always wear gloves in the event of an accident involving body fluids and follow proper procedure in treating child and cleaning and disinfecting effected areas.

• Appropriate physical contact might include: non-demanding, gentle touch of shoulders, hands, arms, head, and back, or sitting a child on leg (when child is preschool age or younger).

• Do a head count periodically to insure that all children are in the correct place and are safe.

• Do not let anyone other than childcare volunteers and kids into the childcare rooms.

• Always be in prayer for each and every child.

Feel free to ask me any questions or to express concerns as they arise. I really appreciate your willingness to volunteer your time to love the kids of Redeemer. Know that although this list seems lengthy, all of these “rules” come from my desire to truly keep our kids safe spiritually and physically. I pray that as we follow this journey as a church to live our lives for Jesus, we would seek to see each child come into the fullness of his or her relationship with Jesus Christ as well.

May – June 2008 RK Curriculum at Redeemer May 21, 2008

The focus for May through June will be over Genesis 6-18.

Our memory verse is: Romans 3:23-24 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

Please spend some time helping your child to memorize these verses and talking about Genesis 6-18.

Parenting with Love and Logic  by Foster Cline, MD and Jim Fay – Although this book is not Gospel centered it does include some wonderful wisdom for setting your kids up to make good choices and minimizing the battles that we as parents tend to have with our children. As a mom of a 2.5 year old and a 4.75 year old, I have truly appreciated the practical tips I have gleaned from this book and the language it encourages parents to use as they offer “choices” for their kids versus just proclamations. Both of my kids have responded well to being given reasonable choices and many tantrums/breakdowns/arguments have been diverted. My one hesitation in giving this book my full endorsement is that just as God shows us grace consistently and forgiveness, we too need to show this grace and forgiveness to our children and our goal is not to create obedient children, but to help our kids understand who they are in light of the gospel.

http://www.seedsmusic.com – These are great CD’s that are made up entirely of bible verses. We are currently using the Seeds Family Worship: Purpose CD in the RK 3-6 year old class to help the kids learn their memory verses.

Below are a few of the Bibles that we use either at Redeemer or in family devotionals. We have really enjoyed each of them, but by far our favorite as a family is The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones. If there is any bible that you are thinking of purchasing as a gift or for your own kids it should be this one!!!
